Secretary/Treasurer's Report: Cynda Clary reported by email
that the treasury has a balance of $8,350.23. This does not include
registration fees or expenses from current meeting. Since attendance
was lower than expected (about 50), and payments were made to speakers
from Australia to defray travel expenses, the balance may be drawn down
somewhat. Cynda also reported that the NEC-63 web site is ready to go
in terms of accepting abstracts and minutes, but that text still needs
to be written.
Administrative Advisor's Report: Dan Rossi congratulated the
committee on this fall's program (see attachment). NEC-63 has been approved
for an additional 5 years through 30 September 2006. The committee has
been formally assigned a new project number, namely NEC-1003. However,
Dan is working on getting back our original designation. University
folk interested in joining NEC-63 (aka NEC-1003) should go to the NIMSS
web page and fill out Appendix E.
CSREES Representative's Report: Dave Holder reported that the
federal budget is in good shape compared to recent years. Whether the
increased funding levels translate into real extra dollars for universities
remains to be seen. Owing to Dave's pending retirement, and leadership
changes within CSREES, Mark Bailey will take over as CSREES representative.
The committee thanked Dave for his services and looks forward to working
with Mark.
Proceedings from Fall 2002 Meeting: Research papers presented
at the meeting will appear in a forthcoming special issue of Agribusiness
edited by Harry Kaiser. Also, executive summaries of the paper will
be put on the NICPRE and NEC-63 web sites.
Nominations Committee: John Nichols has agreed to chair a nominations'
committee. Its charge is to recommend a new slate of officers at the
Spring 2003 meeting.
Spring 2003 Meeting: Shida Henneberry proposed that NEC-63 meet
jointly with the Food and Agricultural Marketing Policy Section (FAMPS)
conference scheduled for March 20-21 in Washington, D.C. The FAMPS'
conference theme is "Emerging Roles of Food Labels: Inform, Protect,
Persuade." After some discussion, the proposal was accepted. John
Crespi will join Walt Armbruster as a NEC-63 representative on the planning
committee. John Mengel suggested that sessions be organized so that
ample time is provided for questions.
Fall 2003 Meeting: Meeting is tentatively scheduled for Lake
Tahoe in late October (dates to be established). Lynn Morgan and Tim
Richards will take the lead on developing the program. Themes will center
around 2002 reports to congress and state-based product differentiation.
The planning committee is: Lynn and Tim (co-chairs), Changin Chung,
Henry Kinnucan, and John Nichols.
Other Business: Archie MacDonald indicated a willingness to
host an NEC-63 meeting in Canada in Fall 2004, possibly in Jasper/Banff.
